South Miami/Coral Gables Elks Lodge #1676 has teamed up with the University of Miami Center for Autism & Related Disabilities (CARD) Program. With a Grant from the Elks National Foundation, Elks Lodge 1676 will host four quarterly events for CARD clients on the Autism Spectrum, their families and Caregivers.Recently 25 Elk volunteers hosted a BBQ. Elk members cooked up hundreds of hamburgers & hot dogs to feed the over 100 in attendance. After lunch, folks enjoyed a Magic Show by Elk members and Professional Magicians from IBM Ring 45. Magicians Jeff Silver & Rick Alan amazed the audience with illusions and sleight of hand, while Mentalist Alexander Beresford amazed with demonstrations of the Mind.Following the Magic Show, attendees were able to attend several events. The athletic attendees were invited to compete in a Soccer Shoot and Hoop Shoot. For others a Game Room offered board games such as Monopoly, Yahtzee, Connect 4, UNO and Scrabble.CARD Staff member, Ms. Jennifer Feinstein, said all the attendees thoroughly enjoyed themselves. CARD clients, their families and caregivers all got to participate and enjoy the festivities.Lodge Exalted Ruler (President and Grant Co-writer), Ramon Matos stated he was thrilled that so many Elk members volunteered to help. Ramon, himself, a client of the CARD program, is the first Autistic Elk Exalted Ruler in the State of Florida.The Elks will work with the CARD Staff to offer Resume Training seminars as well as a Job Fair, Bingo Game, a concert and in December a Christmas party.Starting in April, and every third Saturday thereafter, the Elks will host TOTS (Talent Of The Spectrum).
